The U.S. Nursing Pathway

Several separate processes, each run by a different organization. This page explains them in general terms so you can plan your own next steps with the relevant authorities.

Key topics

What is commonly involved

General information only. Nothing here confirms what any individual will need or receive.

NCLEX-RN

The NCLEX-RN is the licensure examination used by U.S. nursing regulatory bodies to assess entry-level registered nurse competence.

  • Eligibility to test is determined by a board of nursing, not by an employer or recruiter.
  • Registration, scheduling and testing rules are published by the testing organization and regulators.
  • Canadian-educated nurses may already be familiar with the exam, as it is also used in Canada.

U.S. state nursing licence

Licensure is granted state by state. Each state board of nursing sets its own application, verification and documentation requirements.

  • A licence in one state does not automatically authorize practice in another.
  • Boards may require education review, verification of existing licensure, and background checks.
  • Only the board of nursing can determine an individual's eligibility.

State licensing requirements vary by background

The route a nurse follows can differ from state to state, depending on where they were educated and whether they already hold a nursing licence elsewhere.

  • Nurses educated outside the United States may follow a different review route than U.S.-educated applicants.
  • Licensure by endorsement, where applicable, may be available to applicants already licensed in another jurisdiction.
  • Documentation, English-language and education review expectations are defined by each state's authorities. New York, for example, publishes its own route requirements.
  • Because individual histories differ, no general description can confirm what a specific applicant must do.

Healthcare worker certification, including VisaScreen

Certain healthcare occupations may require a healthcare worker certification before some immigration statuses can be granted.

  • VisaScreen is one commonly referenced healthcare worker certification program.
  • It generally involves review of education, licensure and English-language proficiency by the issuing organization.
  • Whether it applies to an individual depends on their occupation and immigration category.

TN nonimmigrant status under USMCA

TN is a nonimmigrant category available to certain Canadian and Mexican professionals, including registered nurses, under USMCA.

  • TN requires qualifying professional criteria and a role that fits the professional category.
  • A supporting employer offer and appropriate documentation are typically part of the process.
  • Decisions are made only by the relevant U.S. government authorities at the time of application or entry.
  • TN status is temporary in nature and is not a permanent immigration outcome.

Employer offer and onboarding

Employers make their own hiring decisions and set their own onboarding, orientation and credentialing requirements.

  • Interviews, offers and start dates are controlled by the employer.
  • Onboarding may include facility credentialing, health screening and orientation.
  • HealthcareCareers.ai does not decide, guarantee or influence hiring outcomes.

Pathway timeline

A general sequence, not a schedule

Steps often overlap and the order can differ. We do not estimate how long any step takes.

  1. Register your interest

Share your nursing background through the guided intake assistant.

The intake assistant collects your professional background so a recruiter has a clear picture before any conversation.

  2. Recruiter review

A human recruiter reviews your profile and follows up with questions.

People, not software, decide how a profile moves forward. Technology only organizes what you share.

  3. Examination and licensure preparation

Understand NCLEX-RN and state licensure steps that may apply to you.

Requirements are determined by the relevant board of nursing and testing organizations, and vary by individual history.

  4. Credential and documentation preparation

Organize education, licensure and credential verification documents.

Where required, healthcare worker certification such as VisaScreen may form part of the documentation process.

  5. Employer alignment and onboarding

Explore potential employer interest, offers and work authorization steps.

Offers, start dates and work authorization outcomes are decided by employers and government authorities.
